Institutional Animal Ethics Committee (IAEC)
Aim:
The Institutional Animal Ethics Committee (IAEC) aims to promote ethical and quality research involving laboratory animals by fostering a research-oriented environment among students, research scholars, faculty members, and technical staff. The committee ensures that all animal experiments are conducted in accordance with the guidelines of the Committee for the Control and Supervision of Experiments on Animals (CCSEA), Government of India, while maintaining the humane care and highest standards of animal welfare.
The IAEC strives to:
- Promote ethical, scientific, and rational use of laboratory animals in education and research.
- Ensure the humane care and use of laboratory animals by following the principles of the 4Rs—Replacement, Reduction, Refinement and Rehabilitation
- Encourage the Undergraduate (UG) as well as Post-graduate (PG) students, Research Scholars (Ph.D.) and Faculties to undertake quality preclinical research in compliance with CCSEA guidelines.
- Enhance the basic research skills in students and professional competence of faculty members and researchers.
Objectives:
The Institutional Animal Ethics Committee (IAEC) is committed to ensuring the ethical and humane use of laboratory animals in research while promoting scientific research excellence. It is also Ensure that all animal experiments are conducted in accordance with the guidelines of the Committee for the Control and Supervision of Experiments on Animals (CCSEA), Government of India.
- To promote, facilitate and coordinate research activities (Animal study) among the student’s (UG, PG), research scholars (Ph.D.) and faculties.
- Promote a culture of ethical and responsible research among undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral students.
- Encourage students and research scholars to undertake innovative preclinical and translational research addressing current healthcare challenges.
- Provide guidance on the ethical design, planning, and execution of animal experiments to improve research quality.
- Facilitate training and awareness programmes on laboratory animal care, ethics, and good laboratory practices.

The roles, responsibilities and functions of the IAEC will be as follows:
- To review, evaluate, and approve research proposals involving the use of laboratory animals in accordance with the guidelines of the Committee for the Control and Supervision of Experiments on Animals (CCSEA), Government of India.
- Ensure that all animal research protocols are scientifically justified, ethically acceptable, and conducted in compliance with the provisions of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, and the CCSEA guidelines.
- Promote and implement the 4Rs principles in research proposal and educational activities to improve the rationality of animal research.
- Ensure the humane care, housing, handling, transportation, and welfare of laboratory animals used for teaching and research purposes.
- Periodically inspect the animal house facility to ensure compliance with CCSEA standards regarding infrastructure, sanitation, animal health, and record maintenance.
- Monitor approved research projects to ensure adherence to the approved experimental protocols and ethical standards throughout the study period.
- Review amendments, renewals, and completion report of ongoing animal research projects.
- Promote interdisciplinary and collaborative research in pharmaceutical sciences, pharmacology and toxicologyinvolving ethical animal experimentation.
- Encourage students and research scholars to present and publish quality research findings in conferences and peer-reviewed journals while maintaining the highest standards of research integrity.
- Support the institutions in academic, research, and extension activities by ensuring that laboratory animal research contributes to innovation and drug discovery in Pharmaceutical Science.
